Is your smile flawed by gaps and spaces in between your teeth? Are you missing one or more permanent teeth? Dr. Roy Oyangen in Schenectady, NY may recommend a dental bridge. A dental bridge is a permanent appliance that closes the gaps in your smile by replacing missing teeth. Our dentist may place a dental bridge to:
- Restore your smile
- Restore your ability to chew
- Allow you to speak without a lisp
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Properly distribute your bite
- Prevent your existing teeth from shifting
The three main types of dental bridges are: traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bonded bridges.
1.) A traditional dental bridge consists of a dental crown on the tooth to each side of the missing tooth. These neighboring teeth are called abutment teeth. A replacement tooth, the Pontic, is placed in the gap and attached between the crowned abutment teeth.
2.) Cantilever dental bridges are not as commonly used anymore. They are placed when there is only one abutment tooth on either side of the gap.
3.) Maryland bonded dental bridges are made of replacement teeth and gums. This is supported by a framework with wings on either side that are bonded to your natural teeth.
