Did you know that worldwide, more than 480,000 new cases of oral and throat cancers are diagnosed each year? And 35,000, or 8%, of those cases are right here in the United States. Oral cancer kills one person every hour in the U.S. A person may have oral cancer and not even know it. In most cases of any type of cancer, early detection is critical. If we diagnose and treat the oral cancer early enough the survival rate is 80-90% greater.
Dr. Oyangen and the team at Advanced Aesthetics Dentistry in Schenectady, NY screen for oral cancer using a VELscope.
The VELscope® screening system consists of a specialized fluorescent blue light and viewing scope that make it easier for us to look closely at the tissues inside your mouth. Normal tissues will glow a bright green and the abnormal tissue does not fluoresce and appears black. See the picture below. Currently, Dr. Oyangen donates 20% of the proceeds from this test to the Oral Cancer Foundation.
If there is abnormal tissue found, it does not always mean that the patient has cancer. When this occurs, our dentist may schedule a second scan later to see if the dark spots disappear, or he may choose to perform a gentle, non-invasive brush biopsy to make sure it is not cancer.
