What does a good at-home dental cleaning routine consist of?
Of course, brushing and flossing is the most important thing you can do, even though you won’t be active at night. Even though you won’t be active while you sleep, the bacteria in your mouth will be. To avoid this type of problem, we recommend using proper brushing technique—using small circular motions, starting in different places every time you brush, and brushing for two minutes at a time. Similarly, you should floss between all of your teeth, making sure to clean near the gum line. If you struggle with flossing, you may want to consider a Waterpik or a floss pick.
Other products may also be useful. For example, many mouthwashes are designed to fight off bacteria and to strengthen your teeth. Similarly, a plaque disclosing agent discolors plaque, making it easier to spot and therefore easier to remove. If you are interested in learning about these products, we recommend speaking with your dentist.
Please remember that no matter how well you clean your teeth at home, you should still visit your dentist every six months. They can remove plaque and bacteria that you can’t.
