Our advanced Velscope technology screens for signs of oral cancer.

A recent study by the Oral Cancer Foundation has shown that more than 450,000 new cases of oral and throat cancers are diagnosed each year. In the United States, on average, oral cancer kills someone every hour. A person may have oral cancer and not even know it. That’s why, as with ALL forms of cancer, early detection is critical.

That’s why in addition to the standard oral exam the dentist may use an additional, non-invasive screening technology.

We light the way to a better smile!

How does the VELscope work to detect oral cancers?

The VELscope screening system consists of a specialized, fluorescent, blue light and viewing scope that make it easier for the dentist to look closely at the tissues inside your mouth. Normal tissue will glow a bright green while any abnormal tissue will not fluoresce and appear black.

If abnormal tissue is found, it does not always mean that the patient has cancer.  When this occurs, our dentist may schedule a second scan in approximately two weeks to see if the dark spot has disappeared. Upon reexamination, if the spot is still present, Dr. Oyangen will refer the patient to a specialist for a biopsy of the area of concern.
