When a patient has crooked teeth or a misaligned bite, Dr. Roy Oyangen in Schenectady, NY may recommend braces. Braces are appliances that are worn to straighten the teeth and to correct a misaligned bite. Braces can be made from different metals, tooth-colored or clear materials. Treatment time with braces varies from patient to patient, but generally, braces are worn from one to three years.

Braces are made up from components.  These include brackets, orthodontic bands, arch wires, and elastics bands. Brackets are squares that are bonded to the front of each tooth.  Brackets hold the arch wires in place that move the teeth. Orthodontic bands are sometimes wrapped around each tooth and bonded in place to anchor the brackets. Our dentist will attach arch wires to the brackets. The arch wires guide the movement of your teeth to their ideal positions. Elastics or rubber bands may be attached to hooks on the brackets, this connects the upper and lower teeth. These elastics apply pressure to move the upper teeth against the lower teeth to improve a patient’s bite.
