Sedation Dentistry

Is It For You?

For some patients even walking by a dental office can make them feel weak and anxious. Whether it was a bad childhood experience or the sights, sounds, and smells of a dental office, these patients often avoid the dental care they need.

Our dental team is certified by New York State to provide sedation dentistry to anxious patients within the Schenectady, New York area.

Who Benefits From Sedation Dentistry

• Anyone who has fears or anxiety about going to the dentist
• Anyone who has let anxiety allow them to put off dental care
• Anyone who needs extensive dental care done in one day
• Anyone who has extremely sensitive teeth

What is Sedation Dentistry?

In a state of conscious sedation, you are in a minimally depressed state of consciousness but can still maintain an open airway and answer appropriately to physical and verbal stimulus; even though your anxiety and pain are reduced.  If a patient chooses sedation dentistry, they will not remember much about their treatment; hence, there are always 2 people with the patient at ALL times. We offer two methods to reduce anxiety before a dental procedure. Our sedation dentist, Dr. Roy Oyangen and his dental team will help you decide which one is the best for you.

Options For The Anxious Patient

Some patients are nervous about visiting the dentist and put off treatment for years. Procrastination can be can be detrimental for your dental health. There are two options which Dr. Oyangen offers that can reduce the patient’s anxiety about treatment.  Quite a few patients having large procedures done such as multiple dental implants or Extensive Reconstruction take advantage treatment.  Here are 2  options for the nervous or anxious patient looking at sedation dentistry.

1.) Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation consists of two parts. Once the patient has clearance from their primary care physician, they will be given oral medication to consume the night prior to the appointment, so they can sleep anxiety free. The patient will need to be escorted to our office the next day, since it is not safe for them to drive themselves. At this time Dr. Oyangen will administer another oral medication. When the patient feels extremely relaxed, and stress-free, Dr. Oyangen will begin to administer Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). The patient will still be conscious and able to ask and or answer Dr. Oyangen’s questions. When the sedation wears off, the patient will have very little recollection of the procedure. We carefully monitor their blood pressure, pulse rate and the oxygen level in the blood during this whole procedure.

With this type of sedation, you will need someone to transport you to and from our office since the effects of the sedation may take hours to wear off. It will not be safe for you to operate a vehicle.

2.) Nitrous Oxide Gas
Nitrous Oxide (or laughing gas) is different from oral conscious sedation. The effects are very similar, wherein the patient will feel extremely relaxed, but will be alert and conscious enough to communicate with Dr. Oyangen and his dental team.  Nitrous oxide may also be preferred by those who are less anxious about dental work being performed. It only takes a few minutes to reach a comfortable state and wears off just as quickly.  Since its effects are so quick, you are safe to drive.

Prior to undergoing any form of sedation, we encourage you to contact your primary care physician.
